Alarm Clock Pro: Your Nighttime Companion
Despite the fact that your iPhone comes with a built-in alarm, a huge variety of “alarm clock” apps are available on the App Store. After you’ve seen today’s app, you’ll think the built-in one lacks in both functionality and elegance. Meet Alarm Clock Pro; it’s here to cover all your time-related needs!
We’ll be taking a look at the basic functionality of Alarm Clock Pro, investigating the options and settings available, and providing a few useful tips!
Watching the Time
To begin with, Alarm Clock Pro offers an almost perfect rendition of a digital clock. It’s beautiful in portrait mode, but turn your iPhone sideways to see a slightly different variation.

You can swipe your finger up and down to change the brightness – very useful for adjusting the screen so it doesn’t blind you after a good night’s sleep!
Tweaking the Options
It’s a very single-focused app, but you can do a lot of customization with the settings. Of course, you can set up alarms; we’ll come back to this in a moment. It’s not hard to turn the brightness adjustment feature off it you don’t use it, and you can choose whether shaking the clock with turn it into a flashlight or not.
This is a neat idea, and it shows how well thought-out this app is: if you’re using Alarm Clock Pro to get you up in the morning, you might want some extra light to help you get around before flipping any brighter switches.
There are plenty of options for the clock display as well. You have five colors to choose from: Cyan, Green, Orange, Pink, and Red (and, yes, the above image is a collage; you’ll have to choose one). Then, you can toggle “Show Seconds,” “Show Weekday,” and “24-Hour Time” to customize the clock event further.
The final setting is auto-lock: by default, the app will lock your device after 5 minutes if unplugged, and never when charging; but these can be adjusted. It makes a really nice desk clock.

Settings
Setting an Alarm
Every alarm begins with the “Add Alarm…” Of course, you’ll need to set the time for the alarm. Next, you can choose which days of the week you want this alarm to recur on. If you don’t choose any, it will ring at the next appropriate time, and then be turned off.
The next one is fun: choose your sound. You can choose no sound (and if anyone can think of a scenario where this would be useful, please let me know in the comments!), one of the built in sounds, or some music of your own.
The last option opens a music picker like the one used when creating on On-The-Go playlist. This is what I’ve been using the most; I’ve made an alarm for 15 to 20 minutes before the time I want to get up and set up a playlist of songs to ease me into the new day. If you don’t turn it off, the alarm will keep looping through your playlist.
Maybe I’m a bit of an oddball, but I’ve found that music I enjoy during the day isn’t quite the same as an alarm. It took a few tries to find something I didn’t want to get up and turn off immediately!

Alarm Options
You’ll probably want to name your alarms, for easy tracking. Then, there are a few advanced options: you can set the length of your snooze from 2 to 30 minutes, or choose “Never” to disable snoozing (well, on your alarm).
You can also set a fade-in time for the alarm, a neat idea to get up with. You can set the volume level of the app itself. Finally, if you’re using an iPhone, you can toggle vibration. If you find yourself choosing the same values for the advanced settings on most of your alarms, you can set those as the defaults.
When you’re done setting up your alarm, don’t forget to hit the “Save” button. Want to get rid of an alarm? Just tap on it in the list and hit delete (at the bottom).
Conclusion
Alarm Clock Pro does it’s job really well. With the beautiful clock and the option to use your own music library as the alarm, this app has a great edge over the built-in alarm functionality.
If you want to try it out before drop your $0.99 (that’s currently 50% off), there’s a limited free version. Could this app be better? Well, more colours can’t hurt, but I haven’t found any feature I wish it had. How about you?
