Monkey Drum Deluxe 1.0 for iOS - Educational Music App Featured By Apple

Monkey Drum Deluxe 1.0 for iOS - Educational Music App Featured By Apple

Flippfly is proud to announce that Monkey Drum Deluxe 1.0 has been featured by Apple in the "New and Noteworthy" section of the App Store. This exposure for their latest universal iOS app could allow it to compete with larger well-funded studios. With hundreds of apps submitted to Apple's App Store every day, it has become extremely difficult for small developers like Flippfly to garner attention for their releases. While larger studios have the ability to draw attention to their products through expensive advertising campaigns, small independent developers have few options to get their app noticed.
However, an app that earns Apple's coveted "New and Noteworthy" feature can gain attention and exposure that would cost tens of thousands of dollars through traditional online advertising. This is the fortunate placement of Flippfly's latest offering, Monkey Drum Deluxe. The app, which is designed to be a fun way for children to learn about music, allows users to create detailed musical compositions by drawing on a touch screen. After being released in relative obscurity, it has risen to the thirtieth place of the education category on the App Store. The week-long feature has the potential to push the app into the top twenty-five, at which point it would gain even more exposure on the mobile version of the app store.
Monkey Drum has drawn widespread praise from parents and app reviewers like Rebecca Fuller, a music teacher and blogger who said, "It's a really great way to use creativity and rhythm and wrap it into a whole lot of fun."
Monkey Drum Deluxe 1.0 is only $1.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Education category.

Classical Music for Babies Makes it Easy to Turn on the Mozart Effect

Classical Music for Babies Makes it Easy to Turn on the Mozart Effect

It's not unusual for an app to make claims about improving intelligence. There are dozens, possibly hundreds, of apps on the iOS App Store that claim to have cognitive benefits. Classical Music for Babies is different from the majority of those apps, though. As the name implies, Classical Music for Babies is geared towards letting children experience what's commonly referred to as theMozart effect.
This effect, first described in a 1991 release by Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis, is purported to improve any numbers of brain-related activities in children under three. The idea is that the complexity of Mozart's music helps the brain to relax and regain its focus. For very young children, this would lead to overall increased brain activity. With the goal of helping children experience the effect, Classical Music for Babies comes loaded with dozens of different songs. In total, there are twelve individual compilations of the musician's work. All that you need to do is play a song or a set of songs for your child.
With an interface featuring cheerful yellows and baby blue, this app comes across as very baby-friendly. There are no unnecessary bells and whistles in this app. It's designed to help parents easily find and play music by Mozart. And that's pretty much what Classical Music for Babies does.
The app is free and comes with enough music to get you started. When you're ready for more Mozart, additional listening packs are available via in-app purchase. Most people who want to use the app regularly will ultimately find themselves making a purchase. These compilations are broken up into categories based on what they're used for. Packs such as Peaceful Resting and Restful Sleep are available. Every pack is $1.99, but users do have the option to pay $14.99 and unlock every song in the app.
The question on the minds of most at this point is likely whether or not the app works. After all, the download page in the App Store makes some lofty claims. In reality, these aren't claims aren't specific to the app. They are all supposed benefits of the Mozart Effect. In addition to improving spacial intelligence and creativity, listening to classical music from Mozart is believed to help improve test scores and learning times. Of course, even if you're a skeptic, it's hard to argue that such music would have any sort of negative effect. At the very least, it's likely to be soothing for young listeners.
Overall, Classical Music for Babies provides a streamlined method to let children listen to the music of one of the greatest musicians in history. Quite likely, parents will find themselves enjoying Mozart as much as their children do.

Samplodica offers Innovative but Mediocre Beat-Making

Samplodica offers Innovative but Mediocre Beat-Making

Looking to mix yourself some crazy tunes or beats on the go? Care to do it in a new an innovative way? Perhaps them you may want to get a good look at a new beat-making app from bryn space calledSamplodica.
To be honest, the biggest feature you're going to notice out of this app is its innovative design. While most beat-making apps for the iPhone incorporate pressing keys and such to adjust the sounds created, Samplodica takes it a step further and has you not only press keys, but shake the iOS device to generate the sound. However, as this actually offers no manipulation, and only activates the sample you want to play, it essentially is nothing more than a gimmick feature to take advantage of the accelerometer. In fact, when changing sample sets you can simply play the same beats without shaking the iPhone in a 'demo' mode, proving how useless this feature is beyond the shock value of showing your friends.
As for making actual samples, there is a lot lacking in Samplodica. For starters, there appears to be no easy way to record the samples you create for usage in real mixing software such as ProTools. While you can record your own sounds to sample, the Samplodica software appears to only allow manipulation in real time unless you record through your headphones cable, this can be severely limiting when sampling on the go, and adds to the feeling this is only a live-experience type of app. While the mix-tape system is nifty to add in samples of your choosing, the bottom lines really comes in that it's very difficult to balance out a beat at a regular pace and experiment without perhaps getting a pretty tired hand.
To add insult to injury, buying the app only gives you access to a few samples. If you want to add additional samples or make special feature changes, you have to shell out an additional $2. You're essentially not getting an entire app for your money. A lot of features are already included but it leaves a bad impression to pay for an app only to find you don't have the entire experience — especially when the extra content is not exactly adding enough to call it a DLC, but not simply an a la cart addition either.
In the end Samplodica gives mixed feelings. It's really unique, really cool in concept, but this proof of concept is not owing up to what you'd expect out of a game.

iFretless Bass: a new musical instrument app for iPhone and iPad

iFretless Bass: a new musical instrument app for iPhone and iPad

Blue Mangoo Software is pleased to announce the release of iFretless Bass 1.3 for iOS. IFretless Bass is an app that sounds like a real bass guitar and has an original user interface design that makes it more playable than other iPad guitar apps. YouTube videos demonstrate the developers making music in a way that shows iFretless as an expressive new musical instrument, capable of taking its place in the studio alongside guitars, keyboards and drums.
"If you've ever watched youTube, chances are you've seen an iBand; a group of musicians who get together and jam on their iPhones and iPads. It's a joke, usually," said Hans Anderson, Director at Blue Mangoo Software. "Some of the performances are polished and well played, but it's the novelty of watching rock stars strumming on mobile phones that attracts viewers, not the quality of the music. But with iFretless, the iPad is now a legitimate musical instrument. Have a look at the videos and you'll see what i'm talking about."
The iFretless user interface is designed to allow users to play live music on an iPad, cleverly avoiding the usual limitations imposed by the small screen size. Here are some of the features that make it more playable than other musical instrument apps:
9 String Bass:
Squeezing the 34 inch neck of a bass guitar onto the screen of a 9 inch tablet is a challenge that requires compromise... or ingenuity. Most guitar apps approach this challenge by adding a scrollbar and by making the space between the frets much smaller than the fret spacing on a real guitar.
IFretless takes a different approach - instead of scrolling along the length of the strings, it adds more strings in the vertical direction. The iPad version has nine strings and nine frets on the screen so you can comfortably play a range of three octaves without scrolling at all. A total of 81 notes are visible, each note having a touchable area that leaves plenty of room for the sloppy fingerwork that happens when musicians are grooving hard.
An Expressive MIDI Controller:
The iFretless Bass sound is solid enough on the low strings to stand in for a real bass guitar but the selling-point of the app isn't the bass sound. Instead, it's the MIDI feature that gives this app the ability to connect the iPad to electronic keyboards, software synthesizers, and digital audio workstations and make use of the high quality sounds and samples there.
Virtual MIDI: iOS Users Don't Need Midi Hardware:
There's a wonderful secret among the iOS musician community: virtual midi apps. On the app store is a growing collection of software synthesizers that run directly on the iPhone or iPad without using any external hardware at all. These apps run in the background; when connected to iFretless via virtual MIDI, each time the user plays a note in iFretless, instead of hearing the built-in bass sound, she hears a Hammond Organ, an electric guitar or a Moog synthesizer. Whatever sound you're looking for, chances are there's an iOS virtual midi app that offers it.
An Instrument Designed From The Ground Up For iOS:
The iFretless developers didn't want to make another guitar imitation app. The GUI borrows from guitar design but whenever there was a choice between making it more like a guitar and making a smoother playing experience on the iPad, they chose the better playing experience.
To start, they chose not to include an imitation of guitar string bending. "There are much better ways to use the vertical axis of motion than bending strings. And there's no need for bending; sliding horizontally, a la fretless bass, is so much more expressive, more precise." said Hans Anderson, Director at Blue Mangoo Software.
Instead of bending the strings, sliding a finger in the vertical direction allows you to smoothly slide between strings, making for some very fast arpeggios. Removing the string bending also makes it possible for the user to scroll the strings in the vertical direction by pulling up or down vertically. If you find this difficult to visualize, the last of the three videos explains it well.
Supported Languages:
- US English, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Vietnamese
iFretless Bass 1.3 is $4.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Music category.
